What is Social Studies World?
Social Studies World is a non-profit, non-partisan, unbiased location on the internet for information regarding the Social Studies
If you're a non-profit, then why the .com?
You must have come to this site from the address socialstudiesworld.com. We own two addresses, the .com and socialstudiesworld.org. The reason we own the .com is because the vast majority of websites have .com extensions and we registered that one for convenience sake. However, by using either address you will get the same content.
Do you own any other domain names?
Yes, we also own the following domains: socialstudiesinfo.com, socialstudiesinformation.com, socialstudiesstudents.com, socialstudiesteachers.com, and socialstudieseducation.com, which also points you to our site.
Are you selling any of your domains?
In a word: no. We purchased the names for our use and also as a service, so that they wouldn't be grabbed by a domain parking service. To that end, if you would like one of the above domains and can think of a better use for it than being parked here, you may feel free to contact us about transferring the domain.
Who was Social Studies World designed for?
Everyone and no one in particular. Social Studies World is a resource for anyone with an interest in any of the Social Studies, including parents, teachers, students, and casual readers
What are the Social Studies?
Currently, Social Studies World recognizes and supports resources on the following topics: History, Political Science, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Law, Archeology, and Anthropology
So why not just "History World," or "Sociology World?"
Because all of the Social Studies are valuable. The goal of studying Social Studies is to see how man interacts in the world in a variety of different settings. It is hoped that by doing this examination from multiple vantagepoints, then life can be improved. All of the Social Studies are interconnected and all are important and we wish to promote them all.
What is the goal of your site?
We have always had just one goal: To promote the understanding and education of the Social Studies on all levels.
How much does your site cost?
Nothing. Social Studies World is non-profit, and as such, we collect no funds for our operation of the site. All information you will find is free.
May I take information I want?
Of course. Our purpose is to promulgate knowledge. We only ask that you follow the guidelines in our legal agreement. Specifically, all we ask is that you give credit to this site and the author of the work in question.
One thing we do ask you to stay away from copying is the source code for this site. The reason we copyright the source code is that this whole site is handcoded by the webmaster, a process that involves many hours of labor. There are very good, free as well as commercial, web authoring tools available on the market. While we don't mind if you "take a peek" at our source code to help you along as you construct your own website, we also don't wish to see any mirror images of our site on the internet either.
Why don't you have any advertisements on your site?
Again, we are non-profit, and to avoid even the appearance of endorsement, we do not allow ads of any types on our site.
May I contribute to Social Studies World?
YES! We would love to have any contribution you would give us, and will post the material on our site with full credit to you and whatever contact information you would like to give. Your submission can be for any audience in any capacity for any subject. If you are interested in giving us work to post, please see the bottom of this page on how to contact us for more information.
Do you use spyware, java applets, or cookies?
We will never use spyware on our website! However, we do use cookies in one instant, on our homepage, to deliever you a new quote everytime you visit. In addition, we do not use java applets, but javascript, again only on our homepage to help deliver you the quote as well as the scrolling text at the bottom of the screen. Turning off the cookie and java feature of your webbrowser will only mean that you will not get a new quote when you visit, and will not see any scrolling text. That is all. Again, for more information regarding cookies, see our legal agreement.
I have a question, but I'm not sure which e-mail address to use?
Don't worry about that. All of our accounts are linked and our server automatically "funnels" them for us. In short, e-mail any of our accounts, you will receive the same priority regardless of which one you use.
Who ownes Social Studies World?
In short: I do. I am soon to be an educator in Pennsylvania with a passion for the Social Studies, and if you wish to learn more about me or contact me, click here.
There's a lot of garbage on the internet, how do I know I can trust the information on your site?
There is an old Japanese proverb that says "If you believe everything you read, better not read." As with anything, you will need to use your own judgment as to the validity of any information you find. As this is a non-profit site, we cannot gurantee the accuracy of all information and links posted on our site. Having said that, we are absolutly committed to the accuracy of the site, and have taken pains to verify all the information contained therein. We ask you contact us immediatly if you discover an error so that it may be corrected. Regarding myself, as I stated, I am an educator in Pennsylvania who's only goal is to improve the quality of information regarding the Social Studies. I am a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in several of the Social Studies. In addition, for the last three years I have been proudly employed by the National Academic Games Tournament to write their Social Studies Questions for their national tournament, a position I received after winning several National Championships in their tournament while in High School
Why the Thinker on the main page?
As you read above, I am employed by the National Academic Games Tournament, as well as a former competitor. The symbol of the tournament is the thinker, and for many years thinker statues were awarded to National Champions. So yes, it does have special meaning to me. Regarding its selection for this site, when designing Social Studies World, I viewed a lot of images. I chose to come back to the Thinker as I feel the Social Studies are a special discipline. While other subjects focus on just one or two aspects, the Social Studies try to explain and improve the entire human condition through different means, and it takes a true thinker to be a true Social Scientist, one who is able to unite all the fields of the Social Studies for the betterment of mankind.
You can also do us a favor. The thinker picture we have on our main page we pulled off the internet many years ago and we no longer know its source. If you happen to know where our thinker came from, please let us know!
What is the Anybrowser campaign?
Anybrowser is a campaign that attempts to promote internet interoperablity. Specifically, the movement attempts to ensure that anyone will be able to access the internet regardless of web browser or operating system. Because we know that many of our viewers might have various operating systems and browsers and we wish to help them all regardless, we support this effort.
Does your site have a viewpoint on different issues?
No, we are viewpoint neutral with one exception: We want to improve and disseminate information regarding the Social Studies.
How can I contact you?
You can go to our Feedback form or e-mail the webmaster.
